‍Dr. ‍Les ‍Joynes

‍The ‍artist ‍within ‍FormLAB ‍at ‍Brazilian ‍Museum ‍of ‍Sculpture ‍(2012). ‍. ‍

‍Practice ‍in ‍local ‍cultures: ‍The ‍Inside ‍Out ‍Studio ‍and ‍the ‍Geographically-dispersed ‍museum

‍inspired ‍by ‍Orhan ‍Pamuk’s ‍Museum ‍of ‍Innocence, ‍I ‍will ‍produce ‍installation ‍work ‍that ‍relates ‍to ‍locality ‍and ‍local ‍memory ‍producing ‍a ‍temporary ‍networked ‍museum ‍of ‍within ‍a ‍neighborhood ‍in ‍Teheran. ‍This ‍networked ‍museum ‍will ‍include ‍a ‍temporary ‍exhibition ‍of ‍small ‍sculptural ‍interventions ‍that ‍relate ‍to ‍a ‍particular ‍neighborhood. ‍They ‍will ‍include ‍solar-powered ‍LED ‍lighting ‍and ‍small ‍motion ‍activated ‍kinetic ‍objects. ‍

‍The ‍networked ‍museum ‍is ‍a ‍reterritorialization ‍of ‍space ‍and ‍explores ‍the ‍proximities ‍between ‍the ‍artist, ‍the ‍residency ‍and ‍the ‍public ‍(Enwezor, ‍2012). ‍

‍This ‍is ‍an ‍important ‍juncture ‍in ‍my ‍career. ‍In ‍2017 ‍I ‍completed ‍my ‍post-doctoral ‍research ‍on ‍studios ‍in ‍museums ‍and ‍am ‍Scholar ‍examining ‍contemporary ‍art ‍and ‍visual ‍cultures ‍at ‍Columbia ‍University. ‍I ‍am ‍co-author ‍of ‍Museum ‍2050 ‍(Long ‍Museum, ‍Shanghai, ‍2019) ‍that ‍explores ‍artist-centric ‍installations ‍and ‍museums-within-museums ‍and ‍co- ‍editor ‍for ‍ProjectAnywhere ‍a ‍peer-reviewed ‍journal ‍on ‍site-specific ‍art. ‍I ‍am ‍also ‍recently ‍selected ‍as ‍2019 ‍US ‍Zero ‍1: ‍Arts ‍Incubator ‍Art ‍and ‍Technology ‍Artist. ‍

‍Background ‍on ‍my ‍Practice

‍FormLAB ‍explores ‍both ‍inner ‍spaces ‍between ‍artists ‍(what ‍William ‍Burroughs ‍called ‍the ‍Third ‍Mind) ‍but ‍also ‍outer ‍spaces ‍in ‍the ‍form ‍of ‍institutional ‍critique ‍and ‍cultural ‍intervention. ‍FormLAB ‍created ‍a ‍Cadavre ‍Exquis ‍assembly ‍line ‍(2010); ‍an ‍artist-shaman ‍ritualized ‍art-making ‍performance ‍(2012); ‍artist-musician ‍performances ‍in ‍Mongolia ‍(2014) ‍and ‍a ‍basketball ‍game ‍on ‍the ‍Great ‍Wall, ‍China ‍(2017). ‍

‍Image: ‍Ghost ‍Market ‍(2017, ‍Beijing) ‍installation ‍view ‍and ‍detail. ‍multimedia ‍installation, ‍bartered ‍objects ‍from ‍19th-20th ‍century ‍Beijing, ‍show ‍reel, ‍photographs. ‍Inside ‍Out ‍Art ‍Museum, ‍Beijing.

‍At ‍the ‍Brazilian ‍Museum ‍of ‍Sculpture, ‍Sao ‍Paulo ‍I ‍collaborated ‍with ‍local ‍shamans ‍who ‍taught ‍me ‍how ‍to ‍use ‍indigenous ‍ritual ‍to ‍create ‍"magic ‍sculptures." ‍Later, ‍in ‍Mongolia ‍I ‍led ‍an ‍overland ‍expedition ‍to ‍a ‍nomadic ‍reindeer ‍herding ‍community ‍to ‍create ‍Shapeshifter ‍(2014) ‍in ‍which ‍I ‍anthropomorphized ‍into ‍a ‍reindeer. ‍Last ‍year, ‍I ‍produced ‍a ‍series ‍called ‍“Great ‍Wall ‍Basketball" ‍(2017), ‍US-China ‍performances ‍on ‍the ‍Great ‍Wall ‍in ‍Northeastern ‍China. ‍I ‍am ‍Chair ‍for ‍Navigating ‍Digital ‍Landscapes: ‍New ‍Hypothetical ‍Continents ‍and ‍Walking ‍with ‍Satellites ‍and ‍Poetic ‍Research, ‍ProjectAnywhere ‍Conference, ‍Parsons ‍School ‍of ‍Art ‍& ‍Design, ‍New ‍York ‍November ‍2018.
