Dr. L.D. Joynes is a specialist on Modern and Contemporary art and visual culture. He is 2018-2019 Visiting Scholar in Visual Culture in the Department of Art History and Archeology, Columbia University and is researching art, performative culture and spectacle in Southeast Asia and China for upcoming workshops and exhibition.
In China he is visiting faculty in modern and contemporary art history at The School of Art, Renmin University of China (RUC), Beijing and visiting faculty on the Peking University Creative Industries Summer Program, Beijing. As US Department of State sponsored Research Fellow on Higher Education he is building models for inter-university cooperation between the US and Asia. A contemporary visual artist, he is founder of FormLAB, an interdisciplinary model for intercultural artistic cooperation and exhibits in museums and galleries in Asia, Europe and the Americas. He is 2019 US Department of State Art and Technology Network Arts Incubator Artist for Sri Lanka.
He also researches post-secondary art education and now authors a paper on Art Education in Mongolia: Models for 21st Century Transition as American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS) Field Research Fellow. At Teachers College, Columbia University he has been exploring new curricula for practice-led research and the new art school as well as the digital interfaces fostering global dialogue in the classroom and the studio.
He serves on the Editorial Board for ProjectAnywhere, a peer-reviewed journal on site-specific art (University of Melbourne, Australia) and the International Committee for the College Arts Association, New York. He has published in Art in America, Flash Art, Springer and recently to four books: Going Beyond: Art as Adventure [peer-reviewed] (Cambridge Scholars, UK, 2017); ProjectAnywhere V.1 [peer-reviewed] (Parsons New School, New York, 2016); Catalogue for Draw at Inside Out Art Museum, Beijing (Inside Out Art Museum and The Leroy Neiman Foundation, New York, 2016) and contributes an upcoming book on contemporary art teaching and dialogues with leading university arts programs (Critical Practices, New York).
Joynes has presented on interdisciplinary practices at Cambridge University; University of California Santa Barbara; University of Coventry, UK; University of Lincoln, UK; National University of Singapore; La Salle College of Art, Singapore; National University for Education, Mongolia; Mongolian State University for Art and Sculpture; and Otis College of Art, Los Angeles; and led the Masterclass for Ph.D. Fine Art students at Chelsea College of Art, London. He was a curatorial assistant for the Inaugural Taipei Biennial “Site of Desire” exhibition in 1998 and was Lead Curator for Networking, an international art exhibition in Japan that showcased work from one hundred visual artists from the UK, Europe and Asia as part of the UK-Japan Cultural Year in Tokyo.
Educated in the US, UK, and Japan, he completed his graduate training in the arts in Japan, England and Brazil and graduate training in management and leadership in the US and Belgium.
